The School of Clinical and Experimental Medicine plays a major role in the research and teaching carried out by the College of Medical and Dental Sciences.
The School is diverse and dynamic with over 300 members of staff, led by Professor Jayne Franklyn, Head of School, and Professors Janice Marshall and Mark Kilby, Deputy Heads of School.
The School of Clinical and Experimental Medicine has five major academic themes, each encompassing education and research.
The School is host to three research centres:
Research in basic and clinical sciences in these areas is fully integrated in the School, which offers training in state-of-the-art facilities, including the Institute of Biomedical Research and the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility. It also has links to major NHS Trusts in the region including University Hospitals Birmingham, Birmingham Children’s and Women’s Hospitals, the Heart of England and the Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Trusts.
Teaching takes advantage of the range of research expertise available to deliver the highest standard of instruction to both undergraduates and to postgraduates. Postgraduate qualifications are available in the form of MPhil / PhD by research, MD by research and taught Masters (MSc).
